- Initiatives include parent meals and seven-day play support.
- Named after a 10-year-old who died from rare cancer.

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has become a pioneer in child-friendly hospital care, earning Sophie's Legacy Approved Hospital recognition. This honor is a testament to the dying wishes of Sophie Fairall, a 10-year-old who passed away in September 2021 following a rare childhood cancer diagnosis.
Before her passing, Sophie identified key areas for improvement within hospital settings. Her vision included better food options for child patients, provision of meals for parents staying with their children, and consistent access to play specialists throughout the week.
The trust has now implemented these vital changes. They now offer meals for parents staying overnight, a specially curated children's menu that took about 12 months to develop and was introduced in March, and ensured play specialist support is available seven days a week. These efforts significantly enhance the hospital experience for young patients and their families.
