Homeopaths Prescribe Allopathy: Maharashtra's Medical Maze

The medical landscape in Maharashtra is shifting as a growing number of homeopaths are now legally registered to practice modern medicine. This development, marked by individuals like Neha Pawar and Mayuresh Kamble obtaining one-year Certificate Courses in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP), has seen the state's count rise to ten such practitioners. The significant demand, with over 10,000 applicants, is largely attributed to widespread job insecurity within the traditional homeopathic field.

Experts acknowledge the difficult situation faced by these practitioners, suggesting that while the current pharmacology course is inadequate, focused training could allow them to serve in limited roles at primary health centers. Concerns persist regarding the sufficiency of training for cross-practice. For many in underserved areas like Mankhurd, these practitioners offer accessible, albeit sometimes risky, alternatives to expensive MBBS doctors.

Practitioners like Shagufta Basha note that alternative medicine providers in certain areas charge minimal fees, often Rs 100, for consultations and dispensing allopathic medicines for common ailments. While serious conditions like TB are referred to clinics, the economic realities drive many patients to seek immediate, affordable care. This situation underscores a broader issue of access and affordability in remote and low-income communities across the region.
