Summary

- The family cultivated both mustard and argemone for oil extraction.
- Argemone oil is toxic and can cause epidemic dropsy with no specific treatment.
In Palamu's Sikka village, a family's self-sufficiency tragically turned fatal. Five members of the Mehta family perished within an eight-day span due to consuming adulterated mustard oil. Investigations revealed that the family did not purchase oil from the market but instead cultivated both mustard and argemone plants. The extracted oils were then mixed before consumption, leading to a toxic combination.
Health officials confirmed that argemone oil is highly toxic and can cause a condition known as epidemic dropsy. There is currently no specific medical treatment for this condition beyond managing symptoms. Authorities have initiated efforts to locate the local unit responsible for processing the mixed oil.
As a precautionary measure, health teams conducted a survey in Sikka village, assessing 195 homes and testing blood samples from 56 residents. Fortunately, all tested samples were found to be normal. Three surviving members of the affected family are currently receiving treatment at Rims in Ranchi, as the community grapples with this devastating loss.
