16 Sep
Summary
- Consumer commission enhanced compensation for nerve damage after hip surgery.
- Doctor and hospital found deficient in service, ordered to pay more.
- Advocate awarded higher compensation for hardship and legal expenses.
A Punjab consumer commission has increased the compensation for an advocate who experienced nerve damage following a hip surgery. Initially awarded Rs 50,000, the advocate's compensation was raised to Rs 70,000 due to the hardship and expenses incurred pursuing his claim.
The advocate suffered hip pain in 2017 and underwent surgery with an assurance of zero risk. Post-operation, he experienced persistent nerve pain and lack of movement in his left foot. Despite repeated complaints, the doctor allegedly failed to refer him to a neurologist, leading to confirmed nerve damage.
The state commission highlighted the doctor's and hospital's deficiency in service, noting the advocate's considerable hardship and expenses in litigation. The enhanced compensation aims to adequately address the suffering and financial loss caused by the negligent treatment.
