TB Deaths Surge: Half Die Within a Month Post-Diagnosis
13 Apr
Summary
- Around 52% of TB patients died at home within a month of detection.
- Comorbidities like hypertension, diabetes, and HIV increase TB mortality.
- Gujarat notified 1.3 lakh new TB cases in the past year (2025).
A recent study indicates a high mortality rate among tuberculosis patients in Gujarat, with about half succumbing within a month of detection. Approximately 52% of these deaths occurred at home, underscoring challenges in timely medical intervention.
The research highlights that many TB patients suffer from serious comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes, and HIV infection, which significantly worsen their prognosis. Addictions like tobacco and alcohol, along with low body mass index, are also identified as major contributing factors to mortality.
While India observes the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Gujarat notified 1.3 lakh new TB cases in the past year (2025), ranking sixth among Indian states. Despite a national decrease in TB incidence and mortality rates in recent years, late detection remains a critical issue, reducing recovery chances and imposing economic burdens on affected working-age individuals.
