26 Jun
Summary
- Canadians consume 3,575 mg sodium daily, far exceeding recommendations.
- Many popular BBQ foods and condiments are high in sodium.
- Careful selection of patties, buns, and condiments is crucial.

As Canada Day celebrations commence, barbecue enthusiasts are reminded that many common grilling foods are unexpectedly high in sodium. The average Canadian consumes 3,575 mg of sodium daily, far exceeding the 1,500 mg recommended by the World Health Organization and Health Canada's warning of 2,300 mg.
This excessive sodium intake, largely from ultra-processed foods like salty snacks, frozen meals, and processed meats, is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease, which are leading causes of death in Canada.
Careful scrutiny of nutritional labels is advised for all burger components. Pre-formed beef burgers can contain a quarter of the daily recommended sodium per patty. While chicken and fish burgers often score slightly lower, non-breaded fish options are healthier. Veggie burgers typically offer lower sodium and fat.
Even seemingly simple items like hamburger buns can be sodium minefields, with some brands providing up to 14% of the daily recommended intake per bun. Condiments like ketchup, mustard, and relish, along with cheese slices, also significantly contribute to sodium levels, potentially making a single burger approach the entire day's allowance.
