3-Minute Sprints Outperform 90-Minute Rides for Health
9 Sep
Summary
- Brief, high-intensity sprints show greater health benefits than long, moderate workouts.
- Study reveals over 700 proteins surged in sprinters, improving cardiovascular health.
- Intense exercise may offer significant molecular health responses, researchers found.
Just three minutes of high-intensity exercise can yield more health benefits than a 90-minute moderate-intensity workout, according to recent research. Men who performed 30-second sprints over a 23-minute session showed a significant increase in proteins linked to improved organ and overall health compared to those who cycled for 90 minutes.
The study, which drew blood samples at various intervals, revealed an immediate surge in over 700 proteins that reduce the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in the sprinting group. In contrast, the moderate exercise group saw changes in only a handful of such proteins.
Cardiologist Dr. Paul Cohen noted that these molecular responses persist even after eight weeks of training, suggesting they are intrinsic to intense exercise. While the findings are promising, the study's small scale and exclusion of women necessitate further research to determine the broad applicability of these results.
