Dementia Risk Slashed by High-Fat Dairy: Study
18 Dec
Summary
- Regular intake of cheese or high-fat cream may reduce dementia risk.
- 20g of cream daily linked to 16% lower dementia risk.
- 50g of cheese daily linked to 13% lower dementia risk.

Swedish researchers have found that regularly consuming high-fat dairy products, such as cheese and cream, may slash the risk of developing dementia. A study involving over 27,000 adults indicated that those who ate 20g of cream daily had a 16% lower risk, and those eating 50g of cheese daily showed a 13% reduction in risk compared to non-consumers.
These findings suggest potential benefits for brain function, with high-fat cheeses like cheddar and brie showing protective effects. Notably, a lower risk of vascular dementia was observed, particularly among those eating more high-fat cheese. Full-fat cream also appeared to offer similar protective benefits.
However, experts urge caution, noting that observational studies cannot prove causation and other lifestyle factors might be involved. They emphasize that established dementia risk reduction strategies, such as maintaining healthy blood pressure and weight, remain paramount.
