22 Jun
Summary
- Patient delayed treatment for months, relying on home remedies.
- A strangulated femoral hernia caused intestinal obstruction and severe pain.
- Emergency laparoscopic surgery successfully repaired the hernia and saved the intestine.

A 55-year-old woman from Dadar, Mumbai, faced a life-threatening emergency after delaying treatment for a femoral hernia for several months. She initially tried various home remedies, including herbal supplements and warm compresses, to alleviate swelling and pain. By May 2, 2026, her condition severely deteriorated, characterized by intense abdominal pain, vomiting, and a complete inability to pass stool or gas.
Upon arrival at MetaHeal Clinic, doctors diagnosed a strangulated femoral hernia causing intestinal obstruction. This condition occurs when a portion of the intestine protrudes through a weak abdominal wall near the groin, becomes trapped, and loses its blood supply. Dr. Aparna Govil Bhasker emphasized that hernias do not heal on their own and delaying treatment can lead to severe complications like gangrene and sepsis.
An emergency laparoscopic hernia repair surgery was performed on May 4, 2026. The surgical team successfully released the trapped intestine, restored blood flow, and reinforced the weakened abdominal wall with a surgical mesh. Fortunately, the intestine was saved from permanent damage. The patient recovered well and was discharged on May 8, 2026, returning to her daily routine after a follow-up visit on May 19, 2026.
