Hepatitis A Scare at Burlington Restaurant Raises Health Concerns

On November 12, 2025, the Halton Region Public Health (HRPH) confirmed a case of Hepatitis A in a food handler at the Burlington Charcoal Pit restaurant located at 2031 Lakeshore Road in Ontario. According to the HRPH, staff and patrons who ate at the restaurant between October 23 and November 1 may have been exposed to the virus.
The HRPH stated that the restaurant is "working closely" with public health authorities and has been inspected, confirming it is compliant with public health standards. While the likelihood of transmission is considered low, the health agency advised those potentially exposed to monitor for symptoms, which can appear 15 to 50 days after infection.
Dr. Patrick Galange, the Associate Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region, noted that older adults and individuals with existing liver conditions are at a higher risk of contracting Hepatitis A. The disease affects the liver and can spread through contaminated food or utensils. To avoid infection, the HRPH recommends regular handwashing, avoiding raw seafood, and considering Hepatitis A immunization if traveling frequently.
