Pregnancy Survival: Mom Fights Rare HELLP Syndrome
15 Aug
Summary
- Candice Davis experienced HELLP syndrome, a rare condition related to preeclampsia.
- Davis' liver bled excessively after a C-section, requiring critical interventions.
- She lost parts of her left hand due to blood clots after her recovery.

Candice Davis' seemingly easy first pregnancy took a critical turn on June 14, 2025, just days before her due date. Experiencing severe abdominal pain and nausea, she was admitted to the hospital where doctors discovered dangerously elevated blood pressure and liver enzymes.
Davis was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome, a rare condition linked to preeclampsia that affects the liver and can cause rapid bleeding. Preeclampsia occurs in 5-8% of pregnancies, but HELLP syndrome develops in only 0.01% to 0.06% of cases.
Following an emergency C-section, Davis' liver began to bleed uncontrollably. Doctors performed emergency surgery and used sterile packing to stabilize her, fearing she might not survive. She remained on a ventilator for about 24 hours.
After regaining consciousness, Davis faced another challenge: blood clots in her left hand. Due to the risk of further liver bleeding, blood thinners were not an option. Despite various treatments, she ultimately lost her thumb and parts of her fingers.
Davis underwent six surgeries and intensive therapy to manage the amputations. One year later, she has significantly recovered, adapting to her new normal with the help of prosthetic devices and the support of her family. She now advocates for pregnant women to heed any warning signs their bodies present.
