Heat, Dehydration Fuel Kidney Disease in North Karnataka
1 Mar
Summary
- Extreme heat and dehydration increase chronic kidney disease rates.
- Kidney disease affects younger adults in North Karnataka's high-temperature zones.
- Early screening and lifestyle changes can prevent advanced kidney failure.

Geographical regions experiencing prolonged extreme heat are witnessing a surge in chronic kidney disease (CKD) rates. North Karnataka, including Belagavi, is identified as a hotspot where prolonged exposure to high temperatures combined with insufficient hydration silently damages kidneys, especially in individuals with pre-existing diabetes or hypertension.
This health crisis is notably impacting younger adults in North Karnataka, affecting their education and careers. Official surveys in Belagavi district reveal over 60,000 hypertension cases, 50,000 diabetes cases, and more than 3,000 CKD cases, with experts suggesting the actual numbers are considerably higher.
Experts emphasize that advanced kidney failure often arises from long-standing, poorly managed diabetes and hypertension. Early screening and timely interventions could significantly alter patient outcomes. Factors such as tobacco use and rising obesity further exacerbate kidney damage, underscoring the importance of quitting tobacco, weight management, and adequate hydration for slowing disease progression.
Recognizing the need for accessible care, specialized nephrology and transplant services, including robotic procedures, are being offered to patients from North Karnataka. The community initiative called for a collective shift in focus from late-stage treatment to robust prevention and early diagnosis strategies.
