Surgeons Weigh In: Best Approach for Heart Valve Disease
2 Aug
Summary
- Experts debated catheter interventions versus traditional surgery for heart valve disease.
- Minimally invasive and open-heart procedures were key discussion points.
- Personalized treatment tailored to patient factors is on the rise.
Cardiac surgeons from across India recently gathered at SGPGIMS in Lucknow for the 39th Foundation Day of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) department. The event, themed "Management of Heart Valve Diseases - A Reappraisal," focused on critical decisions regarding heart valve disease treatment. Experts deliberated on when minimally invasive catheter-based procedures, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI/TAVR), should take precedence over traditional open-heart surgery.
The discussions also encompassed minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, managing failed valve replacements, and addressing valve disease in both pediatric and adult populations. Hands-on workshops provided training in complex techniques like aortic root enlargement and replacement, and the Ross operation. A significant theme was the increasing emphasis on personalized medicine, where treatment choices are individualized based on a patient's specific profile, including age, valve condition, general health, and anticipated long-term results.
During the event, former CVTS department head Prof PK Mittal received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering work in establishing Uttar Pradesh's first pediatric and neonatal cardiac surgery program. SGPGIMS Director Dr RK Dhiman affirmed the institute's commitment to advancing cardiac care through continuous research, innovation, and specialized surgical training, ensuring better patient outcomes.
