In a remarkable feat of speed and medical expertise, a donor heart was successfully transplanted into a 14-year-old girl in Tirupati. The organ originated from a 38-year-old man in Guntur who was declared brain-dead following a road accident. His family's generous decision to donate allowed for this life-saving procedure.
Facing time constraints and the unavailability of an air ambulance, the donor heart embarked on a critical road journey. Transported in a TTD vehicle, the organ left Guntur at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, and arrived in Tirupati by 7 p.m., completing the 240-kilometer distance in just four hours. This allowed the surgical team at Sri Padmavathi Children's Heart Centre to commence the complex, eight-hour transplant operation.
The successful surgery, the institution's 27th heart transplant, was a collaborative effort involving a multidisciplinary team led by chief cardiac surgeon Deepesh Trivedi and SPCHC director N. Srinath Reddy. The girl is currently under close medical observation, with her recovery being closely monitored by the dedicated medical staff.
