A remarkable reunion has taken place between a young child and the surgeon who performed life-saving open-heart surgery on her shortly after birth. Fleur, born six weeks premature, was diagnosed with Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage (TAPVD), a serious congenital heart defect.
At only 28 days old and weighing less than 4lb, Fleur underwent a nine-hour operation at Leicester Royal Infirmary. She was placed on an ECMO machine, a temporary life support system, during the critical procedure. Initially, her family was told she had just a 20% chance of survival, a prospect that deeply distressed them.
Nearly three years on, Fleur has made a full recovery and met again with her surgeon, Ikenna Omeje. He described her as a "special" patient, noting she was the smallest child to have open-heart surgery at the hospital and likely the youngest in the UK due to her prematurity. The reunion was an emotional experience for the surgical team, highlighting the profound impact of their work.
Both Fleur and her twin sister Ottilie faced subsequent breathing challenges but have since recovered completely. Their mother expressed immense gratitude to the surgical team and the Heart Link charity for their support, emphasizing that Fleur's survival has allowed her sister to have a companion.
