27 Jan
Summary
- Unexplained burping after physical activity can signal heart issues.
- A 32-year-old software professional was diagnosed with severe coronary artery blockages.
- Typical heart attack symptoms like chest pain were absent in this case.

Unexplained burping, especially when occurring after physical exertion, can be an indicator of serious heart conditions. A 32-year-old software professional in Bengaluru presented with recent, embarrassing burping episodes that were particularly noticeable after walking or climbing stairs. Despite normal physical tests and routine ECGs, a stress test revealed signs of angina pectoris, indicating insufficient blood flow to his heart muscle.
Further investigation with coronary angiography showed significant blockages: 50% narrowing in the left anterior descending artery and over 95% blockage in the right coronary artery. Consequently, he required bypass surgery and was prescribed statins and aspirin. This case illustrates that heart issues may not always present with classic symptoms like chest pain or breathlessness.
Subtle symptoms such as belching, chills, and fatigue are often overlooked by patients and sometimes even by medical professionals, potentially delaying critical treatment. While burping is frequently linked to gastrointestinal issues, its onset after physical activity, accompanied by mild chest discomfort, sudden bouts, or a change in habit, warrants medical evaluation. Such symptoms can arise from the vagus nerve being stimulated during a heart attack or can manifest as angina.
