Young Women's Hearts Under Threat: New Heart Attack Causes

Young women in their 30s and 40s are experiencing a rise in heart attacks and acute coronary syndromes, a trend noted over the last decade. The American Heart Association highlights this as an under-recognized issue, with causes beyond traditional atherosclerosis. One significant factor is Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), where a tear occurs within the coronary artery wall, impeding blood flow to the heart muscle.

SCAD disproportionately affects women and can occur independently of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Unlike conventional heart attacks where angioplasty and stents are common, SCAD treatment may be conservative to avoid further damage, though intervention is necessary if blood flow is severely reduced. While SCAD is serious, most survivors have a favorable outlook, with recurrence being a possibility requiring follow-up.

Triggers for SCAD can include pregnancy, childbirth, physical exertion, and severe emotional stress, especially as women balance demanding careers and family life. Hormonal influences, blood vessel abnormalities, and genetic factors are being studied. While estrogen offers some protection, it is not absolute immunity, as risks like smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes can still develop.

Delayed help-seeking is a challenge, as symptoms like chest discomfort are often misattributed to indigestion, anxiety, or fatigue. Women may experience breathlessness, nausea, or unusual fatigue. It is critical to understand that cardiac symptoms in women, regardless of age or reproductive status, require urgent assessment and treatment.
