Beyond Longevity: Dignity in Aging?
1 Oct
Summary
- Healthy aging requires dignity, security, and quality of life, not just longevity.
- Loneliness and ageism are serious issues affecting older adults' well-being.
- India must prepare for its growing elderly population with better geriatric services.
On the International Day of Older Persons, the conversation must shift from simply living longer to living well with dignity. Medical advancements have increased life spans, but healthy aging requires more than longevity; it demands security, quality of life, and independence. Complex health issues like multiple chronic conditions, frailty, and dementia, alongside emotional challenges like loneliness and ageism, significantly impact the well-being of older adults.
These issues are compounded by societal neglect, such as ageist assumptions and the alarming reality of elder abuse, which affects an estimated one in six older adults. Caregivers also require support, as their role is physically and emotionally demanding. As India experiences a demographic transition with a growing elderly population, there is an urgent need for robust geriatric services, accessible healthcare, and age-friendly infrastructure.
The ultimate goal is not to merely add years to life but to enhance the quality of those years. This means preserving independence, managing health proactively, supporting caregivers, preventing abuse, and ensuring dignified care. The focus should be on creating a society where growing older means continued participation and respect, not invisibility.
