Health Workers Caught Snooping Patient Records
19 Feb
Summary
- 36 health workers snooped into records of 16 patients.
- Discipline ranged from suspension to termination for offenders.
- Snooping was driven by curiosity, not patient care needs.
In the aftermath of a tragic event last year, 36 health-care professionals were found to have improperly accessed the medical records of 16 individuals. Commissioner Michael Harvey emphasized that such snooping is unacceptable within the healthcare system.
The investigation, stemming from multiple privacy breach notifications, uncovered 71 incidents of unauthorized record access. The majority of these breaches were attributed to employees satisfying their own curiosity, rather than any involvement in patient care.
Health authorities implemented safeguards, including staff reminders and record warnings, to prevent and detect snooping. Despite these measures, disciplinary actions, including suspension and termination, were issued. Employees involved included nurses, administrative staff, a pharmacist, and medical students.
