Health Insurance Costs Skyrocket for Millions
12 Sep
Summary
- Millions face significant health insurance premium hikes next year.
- Rising medical care and prescription drug costs drive increases.
- Impact varies across ACA, job-based, and Medicare coverage.

Americans across the board can anticipate considerably higher health insurance premiums in the upcoming year. These increases are driven by a surge in healthcare expenditures, encompassing elevated prices for medical services and costly prescription medications.
For individuals obtaining coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplace, another year of substantial premium hikes is projected. Insurers are proposing an average increase of approximately 15% for 2027, following a 20% rise in 2026. This trend is partly due to the expiration of enhanced federal subsidies at the end of 2025.
Workers with employer-sponsored health insurance may also bear a greater share of rising costs, with employers anticipating an 8.2% increase in benefit expenses for 2027. Employers may pass these costs to employees via higher premiums, increased deductibles, or other benefit adjustments.
Medicare beneficiaries could see changes in their prescription drug premiums. The baseline monthly cost for Part D coverage is projected to rise about 6% in 2027. This change follows the withdrawal of support for a temporary federal program that previously helped offset these premium increases.
