Stroke Units Cut: Patients Fear "Irresponsible" Health Changes
20 Feb
Summary
- Number of specialist stroke units to be reduced from four to one.
- Emergency general surgery will stop at one hospital, with others changing.
- Patients express concern, calling the changes 'irresponsible'.

Hywel Dda health board has backed substantial changes affecting nine clinical services across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, and Pembrokeshire. A key alteration involves consolidating stroke units from four to a single facility at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen. While a 'treat and transfer' service will remain at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, along with Llanelli and Haverfordwest, this consolidation has drawn criticism.
Patients treated for strokes have voiced strong opposition, with one describing the decision as "frankly irresponsible" and questioning the logic of centralizing care away from Bronglais, which sits geographically central to the health board's area. Concerns have also been raised about the logistics of transferring patients over long distances.
Beyond stroke services, emergency general surgery will end at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, though it will continue in Aberystwyth and Carmarthen. Additionally, one hospital's intensive care unit will be downgraded to an enhanced care unit. The board emphasized that these adjustments are driven by a need to strengthen vulnerable services and ensure long-term sustainability, not financial savings.
These approved changes are not yet implemented, and the public has been advised to maintain their current routines. The health board noted that addressing service vulnerabilities is critical, as many services struggle with staff availability and aging infrastructure, making the current model unsustainable.
