Haryana is set to convert all its special newborn care units (SNCUs) into integrated mother-newborn care units (MNCUs) by November 1, 2026. This significant healthcare reform will enable mothers to remain bedside with their infants throughout specialized treatment and recovery periods.
Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Sumita Misra announced these directives recently, emphasizing the integration of maternal and neonatal care within existing facilities. The state currently manages 29 SNCUs, 62 newborn stabilization units, and 527 newborn care corners.
The state is also prioritizing the construction of eight dedicated mother and child health wings and has expanded first referral units for high-risk pregnancies from 40 to 100. These measures aim to improve referral services and strengthen pregnancy tracking.
Key health indicators in Haryana show marked improvement, with the maternal mortality ratio decreasing from 127 to 94 and the neonatal mortality rate from 26 to 17. The state also achieved a 99.1% institutional delivery rate between April and July 2026 and has recruited 38 specialist doctors.
