2 Jul
Summary
- Domestic violence affects 13.6% of married women, a decrease from previous surveys.
- Women's financial independence and household decision-making power have increased.
- Teenage pregnancies and obesity rates show concerning upward trends.
In Haryana, recent survey data indicates a mixed picture for women's empowerment and well-being. While there has been progress in financial independence and household decision-making, domestic violence continues to be a prevalent issue. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) for 2023-24 reports that 13.6% of married women aged 18-49 have experienced spousal violence.
Improvements are noted in women's participation in household decisions, rising to 91.1% from 87.5% in the previous survey. Financial independence has also seen an uptick, with 25.1% of women receiving cash payments for work and 85.2% operating their own bank accounts. Mobile phone ownership has reached 64.9%.
However, concerning trends also emerged. Physical violence during pregnancy increased to 2.6%. Furthermore, teenage pregnancies are on the rise, with 4.7% of women aged 15-19 being mothers or pregnant, up from 3.9%. Health challenges like obesity (37.3%) and high blood sugar levels (16.7%) are also significant concerns.
Sociologists highlight that while Haryana's women are becoming more educated, financially empowered, and digitally connected, the persistence of domestic violence underscores that social empowerment still lags behind economic and financial progress. The figures suggest that despite advancements, comprehensive empowerment remains an ongoing goal.
