A health emergency has gripped Chayansa, a village in Haryana's Palwal district, where at least 12 individuals, including five children, succumbed to severe liver-related complications over a 15-day period in late January and early February. Initial investigations point towards viral hepatitis and contaminated drinking water as probable causes.
The first jaundice-related deaths were reported on January 31 in the village of 5,700 residents. A rapid response team was promptly deployed, initiating medical camps and door-to-door surveys. Seven deaths occurred between January 27 and February 11, with four attributed to acute hepatitis or liver failure in victims aged nine to 65.
Extensive screening of around 1,500 villagers and testing of 107 household water samples are underway. Preliminary findings indicated bacterial contamination and inadequate chlorination in 23 water samples, with coliform bacteria detected in storage tanks. While leptospirosis and animal-linked transmission have been ruled out, health officials continue to examine medical, environmental, and behavioral factors.
As a precautionary measure, 15,000 halogen tablets have been distributed for water purification, and a helpline has been established. Surveillance and medical camps will persist until the situation stabilizes, aiming to curb the spread of potential waterborne infections and reassure the community.
