Authorities in Haryana are enhancing surveillance and implementing crucial measures to curb the spread of suspected lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle. The animal husbandry department has issued an advisory detailing immediate steps, including the isolation of sick animals from healthy ones and restricting livestock movement from affected regions.
Preventive strategies involve ring vaccination around infected villages and broader vaccination in high-risk zones, utilizing available goat pox vaccines for cattle and buffaloes aged four months and older. Infected animals will not be vaccinated. Intensified vector control is also a priority, given the disease's transmission through mosquitoes, flies, and ticks.
Further recommendations include regular disinfection of animal holdings and vehicles, along with the use of insecticides. Infected animals must be kept separate until recovered, and common grazing areas are to be avoided. Cattle markets within a 10-km radius of infection epicenters will be closed, and participation in fairs and shows in affected areas is prohibited.
Haryana previously faced a severe LSD outbreak in 2022, which resulted in approximately 31,000 animals being infected and around 3,000 deaths. Samples from currently suspected cases have been sent to NIHSAD in Bhopal for confirmation.
