16 Apr
Summary
- Longmont's Happy Smackah 5K will support two community members this year.
- Gene Kath, a teacher, is battling glioblastoma after a stroke.
- Renee Marcacci, an elementary school supervisor, is fighting recurring breast cancer.

The 15th annual Happy Smackah 5K, scheduled for May 9th around Longmont's McIntosh Lake, will support two individuals from the St. Vrain Valley School District battling significant medical issues. This year marks a new approach, honoring two unrelated beneficiaries, Gene Kath and Renee Marcacci, with proceeds split between them.
Gene Kath, a math and aeronautics teacher with over two decades of service in the district, was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor, following a stroke and seizure. Kath, who has volunteered for the Happy Smackah event since its inception in 2011, expressed being overwhelmed by the nomination and the support from former students and the community.
Renee Marcacci, a campus supervisor at Rocky Mountain Elementary School, is currently facing a recurrence of breast cancer after being in remission for nearly three decades. Her husband also serves as a campus supervisor in the district. Marcacci views her selection as a Happy Smackah beneficiary as particularly validating, given the nature of her role.
Both Kath and Marcacci have had to step away from their professional duties to focus on chemotherapy and rest. The Happy Smackah run, which began in 2011 and previously supported individuals like Cooper Rusaw in 2025, offers a profound sense of community support, reminding them they are not facing their battles alone. The event invites public nominations for SVVSD students and employees annually, with honorees selected by the Happy Smackah board.
