Hantavirus Scare: All Symptomatic Passengers Off Ship

All passengers exhibiting hantavirus symptoms have been safely removed from the MV Hondius, operator Oceanwide Expeditions confirmed on Thursday. Three passengers were evacuated to the Netherlands for medical attention; two of them displayed symptoms, while one was asymptomatic.
The ship, which was on an Atlantic cruise, is currently sailing from Cape Verde to the Canary Islands. Approximately 100 remaining passengers and crew members on board will undergo monitoring in the Canary Islands before they are permitted to fly home.
An international alert was activated on Saturday, May 3rd, when the World Health Organization announced a hantavirus outbreak on the vessel, noting that three fatalities had been associated with the outbreak prior to these evacuations.
