Summary

- At least three deaths and eight cases are linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship.
- Risk to the public is considered very low, with no confirmed cases in NJ.

Health authorities in New Jersey are monitoring two residents who may have been exposed to hantavirus. These individuals were not passengers on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which is currently at the center of a global health alert.
This cruise ship has been linked to at least three deaths and a total of eight confirmed and suspected hantavirus cases. The New Jersey residents' potential exposure occurred during air travel abroad. Governor Mikie Sherrill stated that the risk to the public in New Jersey is very low, with no confirmed cases in the state.
Several other U.S. states, including Arizona, California, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia, are also monitoring passengers who have disembarked. So far, none of these individuals have shown symptoms or tested positive for the virus. Hantavirus is typically spread through rodents, with human-to-human transmission being uncommon.
