A severe outbreak of hantavirus has resulted in three fatalities among passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. The vessel was en route between Argentina and Cape Verde when the health crisis emerged. One confirmed case of hantavirus infection, along with five suspected cases, was reported by the World Health Organization.
Tragically, three individuals have died as a result of the illness. One of the deceased was a 70-year-old passenger whose body remains on Saint Helena. His wife, aged 69, was evacuated to South Africa and passed away in a Johannesburg hospital. A third fatality was still aboard the ship.
Furthermore, a 69-year-old British passenger was also transported to Johannesburg for intensive care treatment. Discussions are underway regarding the potential isolation of two other symptomatic passengers in Cape Verde. The WHO is coordinating medical evacuations for those showing symptoms.
