Cruise Ship Virus Claims Lives, New Yorkers Monitored
12 May
Summary
- At least 10 individuals infected with hantavirus on cruise ship.
- Three New Yorkers are among 18 people quarantined in Nebraska.
- The incubation period for hantavirus is expected to end in late June.

An outbreak of hantavirus on the MV Hondius cruise ship has led to at least 10 infections and three confirmed fatalities. Three New Yorkers are currently among the 18 individuals undergoing quarantine and monitoring at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
New York state health officials emphasize that the three New Yorkers are in Nebraska and pose no immediate risk to the public in their home state. They are being housed in secure quarantine units equipped with amenities and medical observation.
If any symptoms of the virus, which can mimic the flu and potentially affect lungs and kidneys, appear, immediate treatment will be administered. While typically not person-to-person transmissible, a rare version of the Andes virus can spread through close contact or bodily fluids.
Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed state preparations are underway. Officials project that the risk period will subside by late June as the 42-day incubation period concludes, significantly reducing the threat to the United States.
