The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that a hantavirus outbreak, stemming from the South American Andes variant, is nearing its end. This outbreak initially concerned approximately 150 individuals on a small cruise ship, the MV Hondius, comprising passengers, crew, and experts from 23 different nations. The infection chain is believed to have potentially begun with a Dutch couple who may have contracted the virus ashore in Argentina prior to boarding.
As of June 25, the total number of confirmed cases remained at 13, with three unfortunate fatalities. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that all contacts of the two cases identified in South Africa have concluded their observation periods. Similarly, quarantine and follow-up periods for all individuals in Spain and the Netherlands, including the crew of the MV Hondius, have also been completed, with no new infections reported among them. A small number of contacts were still under follow-up as of the reported date, but the situation is considered stable.
