Australia Quarantines Ship Passengers Amid Hantavirus Fears
11 May
Summary
- Six passengers from a cruise ship with hantavirus cases are quarantined.
- The ship arrived near Tenerife with 147 people aboard.
- Health officials stress low public risk despite the rare virus.

Australian authorities have implemented national quarantine measures for six passengers evacuated from the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius, which is at the center of a hantavirus outbreak. The passengers, including five Australians and one New Zealander, arrived in Perth and were taken to a quarantine facility. This precautionary step aims to protect the community and the passengers, who have not yet shown symptoms.
The MV Hondius arrived near Tenerife with 147 people aboard. At least three deaths have been linked to hantavirus, a rare disease transmitted through rodent contact. Six of the eight individuals who fell ill have confirmed hantavirus cases. Despite concerns, health officials, including the WHO chief, have stressed the low risk to the general public, stating it is not comparable to a coronavirus pandemic.
Several countries, including the US, France, and the UK, are also evacuating their citizens from the ship. Some repatriated passengers have shown symptoms or tested positive for hantavirus during transit, leading to immediate isolation upon arrival in their home countries. The incubation period for hantavirus can be up to 42 days, potentially extending quarantine periods.
