Cruise Ship Cleared After Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak
1 Jun
Summary
- The MV Hondius is cleared to resume voyages from June 13 onwards.
- The outbreak linked to the ship resulted in three deaths and 13 cases.
- Extensive cleaning and disinfection were completed per guidelines.

The expedition cruise ship, MV Hondius, has received clearance to resume its sailing schedule from June 13, 2026, following a significant hantavirus outbreak. The operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed that all voyages will proceed as planned without further disruption.
In April 2026, the MV Hondius experienced a severe outbreak of hantavirus, a rodent-borne illness transmitted through droppings and urine. This outbreak was associated with three fatalities and 13 confirmed cases among passengers and crew.
The ship's planned departure from Rotterdam was delayed to allow for additional cleaning. A final inspection on May 29, 2026, by GGD Rotterdam confirmed that the vessel had been effectively cleaned and disinfected according to established guidelines.
Individuals affected by the virus experienced symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle aches. Some crew members and passengers were placed in quarantine facilities, including at Arrowe Park Hospital in the UK, with many having since completed their isolation periods.
