Hantavirus Cruise Passengers Leave Quarantine Early

Five U.S. cruise ship passengers quarantined in Nebraska were permitted to leave Monday, halfway through their 42-day exposure period to hantavirus. These individuals, who are asymptomatic and tested negative for the Andes strain, can complete their quarantine at home. They must adhere to strict isolation, with daily monitoring via video calls and temperature checks conducted by local health officials.

States like New York, California, Arizona, and Oregon have agreed to monitor returning passengers. These individuals are transported via private planes and escorted by emergency vehicles, with law enforcement ensuring compliance with home quarantine orders. One passenger described a rigorous departure process involving medical staff and a state trooper at his residence.

Thirteen hantavirus cases, including 11 confirmed, have been linked globally to the MV Hondius cruise ship. While no Americans have tested positive, three deaths have occurred. The Andes strain, responsible for these cases, is the only known human-to-human transmissible strain, though transmission is rare and typically occurs through rodent exposure.
