Hantavirus Outbreak: Cruise Ship Passengers Monitored Globally
7 May
Summary
- Dozens of cruise ship passengers are monitored after a hantavirus scare.
- A rare hantavirus strain on a cruise ship has caused multiple deaths.
- Passengers disembarked unaware, now monitored in their home countries.

Health authorities are closely monitoring dozens of cruise ship passengers due to a hantavirus scare. This development follows an outbreak linked to the expedition vessel MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions. The outbreak has regrettably resulted in multiple fatalities and confirmed or suspected infections from a rare hantavirus strain.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that passengers who disembarked the vessel during its stop at Saint Helena on April 23 are now being traced. These individuals have returned to various continents, including North America, Europe, and Australia, and have been instructed to monitor for symptoms.
Three individuals, identified as a British, Dutch, and German national, were evacuated from the ship and transported to the Netherlands for medical treatment. A Swiss passenger who had already returned home has also tested positive for the virus. International health authorities are coordinating efforts to track and manage potential further spread.
