Awareness and timely screening are highlighted as the most effective strategies against cancer. Over the past three years, Hamirpur district in Himachal Pradesh has identified 474 individuals suffering from cancer through the Health Department's screening efforts. This includes 197 cases in 2024, 152 in 2025, and approximately 125 up to June 2026. The Health Department is committed to reaching every village to facilitate early detection of the disease, emphasizing that regular check-ups are vital.
Screening campaigns are actively conducted through 'Ayushman Arogya Mandirs,' healthcare institutions, and special medical camps. Community Health Officers and ASHA workers are instrumental, with CHOs performing screenings at sub-centres and ASHA workers visiting homes. Individuals showing suspicious symptoms are urged to visit healthcare facilities for further evaluation. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases facilitates regular screening for those aged 30 and above, with a focus on oral, breast, and cervical cancers.
Chemotherapy services are accessible at the Civil Hospital in Nadaun and the Medical College in Hamirpur, which also provides 42 types of anti-cancer medications. Patients receive chemotherapy and follow-up care on a same-day basis. While many identified patients receive treatment locally, some seek specialized care in other districts. This comprehensive approach underscores the district's commitment to cancer prevention and control.
