In Haiti, a groundbreaking solar-powered cold chain initiative has revolutionized vaccine storage, replacing older gas and kerosene-powered refrigerators that were costly and prone to fuel shortages.
Beginning in 2017, more than 850 solar refrigerators were deployed across the country within three years, significantly improving access to essential immunizations. This upgrade addressed critical logistical challenges, especially in rural and mountainous areas where transporting fuel was difficult.
The solar refrigerators maintain vaccine temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius and allow for remote monitoring. This innovation enables smaller health facilities to store doses and transport them using cool boxes to nearby communities, reducing previously arduous journeys for families seeking vaccinations.
Haiti's health ministry was the first to adopt this technology through the Cold Chain Equipment Optimization Platform. By 2021, over 920 solar units were installed, equipping 96% of health institutions with this vital equipment.
While the solar initiative has been a major factor, vaccination coverage increases, such as a rise from 73.6% in 2017 to 86% in northern Haiti by the end of 2018, are also attributed to other improvements in the immunization system.
