Summary
- Scientists discovered a 'third cell' crucial for full hair follicle reconstruction.
- This breakthrough could lead to regenerative treatments for baldness.
- The new cell, alongside two others, creates a complete hair growth cycle.

A groundbreaking discovery by scientists at Japan's RIKEN Institute and OrganTech may hold the key to reversing hair loss. Researchers have identified a previously unknown 'third cell' that plays a vital role in the regeneration of hair follicles.
This newly found cell works in concert with two other known cellular components, epithelial stem cells and dermal papilla cells. Together, these three cell types have successfully demonstrated the ability to recreate the entire hair growth cycle, including phases of growth, rest, and shedding, in laboratory experiments with mice.
For nearly two decades, scientists have strived to regenerate hair follicles. Previous attempts had laid the foundation by creating follicle precursors, but these lacked the ability to sustain a full, independent hair growth cycle without external cellular support from surrounding tissues.
The 'third cell,' identified as around-bulge mesenchyme (ABM) cells, appears instrumental in transitioning follicles from a resting state to active growth and promotes follicle elongation. This research advances regenerative medicine by understanding precisely orchestrated cellular interactions for tissue reconstruction.
