Monsoon Alert: Gurugram Gears Up for Vector-Borne Disease Fight
6 Apr
Summary
- Gurugram health department is preparing to combat vector-borne diseases.
- Over 200 water bodies are stocked with Gambusia fish to control larvae.
- Fever surveys and fogging operations will run from May to October.

Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, Gurugram's district health department has initiated comprehensive preparations to combat vector-borne diseases. These efforts are being implemented under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, with a focus on preventive measures.
A recent meeting involving senior officials and the district task force finalized plans for inspections and rapid mass fever surveys. To control mosquito larvae, approximately 204 water bodies across Gurugram have been replenished with Gambusia affinis, a species known for feeding on larvae, thereby limiting the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria.
From May to October, the health department will conduct extensive surveillance. This includes rapid mass fever surveys, fogging operations, breeding checks, and mapping of vulnerable areas. Last year, Gurugram recorded 64 dengue and eight malaria cases, a decrease from 186 dengue and two malaria cases in 2024, with no reported deaths in either year.
Preventive systems are being established, such as identifying breeding hotspots linked to garbage dumping and stagnant water. Inspections of water pipelines for potential leakages, a common contamination source during monsoon, are also part of the strategy. Key hotspots identified last year include Wazirabad, Garhi Harsaru, and Pataudii, where sensitization drives and household awareness campaigns will be conducted.
Dedicated vector-borne wards and adequate vaccine stocks will be readied based on projected caseloads. The department aims to cover similar targets as previous years, where thousands of households were surveyed and a significant number of tests were conducted.
