Young Hearts Racing: Gujarat Sees Surge in Cardiac Emergencies
29 Sep
Summary
- Cardiac emergencies in Gujarat show a concerning rise, especially among younger populations.
- A significant portion of cardiac emergencies now involve patients aged 40 or younger.
- Lifestyle factors like tobacco use and poor diet are key contributors to heart issues in youth.
Cardiac emergencies in Gujarat are no longer exclusively an issue for older individuals, with EMRI 108 ambulances reporting 71,088 patient transports for cardiac events in 2026 so far. This represents a notable increase compared to previous years. Strikingly, analysis indicates that three out of every ten cardiac emergencies involve patients aged 40 or younger.
World Heart Day, observed annually on September 29, promotes awareness about cardiac health under the theme 'Use Heart for Action.' A study at UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology assessed factors contributing to heart attacks in patients up to 30 years old. It identified unconventional markers, with 53% reporting tobacco use, 51% having less than 30 minutes of daily physical activity, and 49% consuming irregular meals.
Cardiologists note a reduction in the average age of patients experiencing cardiac events. Factors such as work-related stress and environmental pollution are implicated. The study also revealed stark differences in cardiovascular risk factors compared to older patients, with younger individuals showing higher rates of tobacco consumption and stress. Conditions like obesity, diabetes, and a family history further elevate risk, urging young people to prioritize heart health immediately.
