A district-level nutrition initiative in Sabarkantha, Gujarat, has demonstrated success in enhancing maternal health and birth weights within one year. The "Lalan Palan" project, a collaboration between the Sabarkantha District Panchayat and the Health Department, targets underweight pregnant women. Eligible women, weighing less than 42 kg, receive free nutritional kits bi-weekly.
These kits, containing chickpeas, dates, protein powder, and iron syrup, have been distributed to over 2,200 women. Health assessments indicated improvements in hemoglobin levels and overall maternal well-being, with babies born under the scheme averaging over 2.5 kg. The initiative aims to reduce the maternal mortality rate and combat malnutrition through sustained nutritional support.
