Gujarat Food Safety Crackdown: Tons of Adulterated Products Seized

In August, Gujarat's Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) initiated a significant enforcement drive, leading to the seizure of 42.9 tonnes of purportedly adulterated food items. The operation resulted in the cancellation of sales licenses for 50 drugstores and the closure of two drug manufacturing companies. Eight other drug manufacturers faced license suspensions, with manufacturing licenses for 11 drugs also being cancelled.
Authorities inspected over 1,625 food units, issuing improvement notices to 306 for various defects and taking strict action, including license cancellations, against 38 units for serious negligence. These actions were concentrated in Surat, Valsad, Anand, Jamnagar, and Mehsana. Furthermore, 2,238 food businesses were inspected, and 2,591 samples were collected for testing. The seized food items, valued at Rs 93 lakh, included oil, chilli powder, and milk.
The FDCA also targeted dairy analogues and illegal cosmetics. Approximately 3,078 firms were inspected for the illegal sale and use of dairy alternatives, with 145 suspicious samples collected and 2.5 kg of substandard dairy analogue destroyed. Additionally, illegal cosmetics worth over Rs 2.68 lakh were seized from an unlicensed firm in Ahmedabad.
