Gujarat Bans Rolling Papers Over Health Concerns

The Gujarat government has implemented an immediate ban on the storage, sale, and distribution of rolling papers and pre-rolled cones. This measure, announced on Tuesday, aims to mitigate health risks associated with their use. These thin papers, readily available at local shops, are primarily used by tobacco smokers for rolling cigarettes.

The prohibition follows recent concerns voiced by local media and social organizations. These groups highlighted that the rolling papers, colloquially known as 'Gogo paper,' are reportedly being used by teenagers and youths to smoke illicit substances like charas and weed, according to a home department notification.

Officials stated that the rolling papers contain harmful toxic substances, including titanium oxide, potassium nitrate, and chlorine bleach, making them detrimental to health. The pervasive availability of these papers at paan parlours and grocery stores has been identified as a contributing factor to rising addiction rates among the youth. Violators will face charges under section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobeying government orders.
