Sam Birchall, a 25-year-old guitarist from Greater Manchester and lead guitarist for the indie band The Lilacs, has successfully completed a year of cancer treatment and is now cancer-free. His diagnosis of testicular cancer in February 2025 led to the postponement of the band's UK tour.
Birchall underwent chemotherapy at The Christie and a subsequent robotic lymph node removal operation. Remarkably, he was discharged the same day, a procedure doctors believe made him the first person in Europe to go home so quickly after such surgery. He has praised the "amazing" support from his fans and friends throughout his health battle.
The guitarist shared that the diagnosis was a shock, causing significant interruption to his day-to-day life and ability to perform. His bandmates also expressed emotional relief and joy upon hearing he was cancer-free, noting the strong support from fans at recent shows.
