Grimsby Care Home Fails Residents, Faces Urgent Action
21 Oct
Summary
- Residents faced malnutrition risk due to inadequate care.
- The facility was placed in special measures by the CQC.
- Staffing pressures contributed to delayed essential care.

Yarborough House, a care home in Grimsby, has been placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following a damning inspection. The CQC found that leaders at the facility failed to address previous concerns, leading to a further deterioration in care quality. This resulted in residents being exposed to risks of malnutrition, dehydration, and neglect.
During the inspection in July, it was discovered that several residents had experienced significant weight loss, with some not being referred to dieticians despite the risks. Basic care needs, including assistance with eating, drinking, and oral hygiene, were not consistently met. Patients requiring modified diets were at risk of choking, and those with mobility issues were not repositioned regularly, increasing their risk of skin damage.
The watchdog's report highlighted concerns about delayed care, with residents reporting long waits for staff assistance. Staffing pressures were identified as a contributing factor to these delays and the infrequent repositioning of residents. Although patients and their relatives spoke positively about the staff's dedication, the CQC noted a lack of compassionate care and a failure to recognize potential neglect.
The CQC has mandated rapid and continued improvements at Yarborough House and will closely monitor the service to ensure resident safety. This regulatory action aims to protect individuals receiving care at the facility.
