Smear Test Saves Life: Grandma's Urgent Plea
19 Jan
Summary
- Gayle Maxwell's life was saved by a two-minute smear test.
- Cancer detected early allowed for successful treatment and recovery.
- Early detection through screening offers more effective treatment options.

A grandmother is sharing her story to encourage others to prioritize smear tests, a simple check that she believes saved her life. Gayle Maxwell was diagnosed with aggressive cancer in February 2015, just weeks after delaying her smear test until after the Christmas holidays.
Her cancer was detected early thanks to the screening, enabling doctors to perform surgery in April 2015 followed by chemotherapy and internal radiotherapy. By October 2015, Maxwell received the all-clear and remained under close medical observation for five years. She stresses that delaying the test could have made her cancer inoperable.
Maxwell, now 50, is supporting the Scottish Government's 'Be The Early Bird' campaign. She urges eligible individuals to overcome any fear associated with smear tests, emphasizing that the brief discomfort is far outweighed by the potential life-saving benefits and the possibility of successful, timely treatment.
