Grandmother's Death: Was Mounjaro Overlooked?
25 Aug
Summary
- Coroner found doctors weren't solely focused on Mounjaro.
- Daughter claimed Mounjaro was the only diagnosis mentioned.
- Grandmother died of faecal peritonitis after home discharge.

An inquest into the death of 73-year-old Caroline Savage heard allegations that medical professionals may have overly focused on her use of the Mounjaro weight-loss medication. Savage died in 2024 from faecal peritonitis, a severe condition resulting from a perforated intestine.
Her family expressed concerns that clinicians too readily attributed her symptoms to side effects of Mounjaro. However, Norfolk area coroner Yvonne Blake noted that doctors had considered other potential diagnoses, such as pancreatitis or an aortic aneurysm, and stated it was not clear that Mounjaro had overshadowed other considerations.
Savage was taken to the hospital on October 18, 2024, with severe pain. Despite examinations and tests, she was discharged. Tragically, she collapsed at home about six hours later and went into cardiac arrest. The coroner indicated she would write to the hospital and ambulance service regarding record-keeping and communication issues but found no systemic defects in the emergency department.
