10 Mar
Summary
- Dr. Ravneet Kaur, with 25 years of experience, is the new Director-Principal.
- Immediate focus on strengthening trauma and emergency services.
- New Emergency and Trauma Block sees a three-fold patient increase.

Dr. Ravneet Kaur has taken charge as the new Director-Principal of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), bringing over two decades of experience to the role. She plans to immediately focus on enhancing the hospital's trauma and emergency services, which have seen a substantial increase in patient volume. This surge is putting considerable pressure on existing infrastructure and healthcare staff.
The hospital's new Emergency and Trauma Block, inaugurated less than a year ago, is now handling nearly three times the number of patients it was designed for. With occupancy exceeding 100 percent and around 300 patients daily, the facility is overburdened. This situation is expected to persist as long as healthcare services on the periphery are not improved and referral systems are not optimized.
Dr. Kaur acknowledged the challenges, noting that while the sheer volume of patients is beyond direct control, improved care and facilities can be achieved through resource management and staff support. She highlighted recent events, such as the Holi evening rush, which underscored the need for robust emergency preparedness and efficient response mechanisms during peak times.
