GLP-1 Heart Benefits Vanish When You Stop
23 Sep
Summary
- Heart benefits from GLP-1 drugs disappear quickly after stopping.
- Cardiovascular risks increase significantly after six months off therapy.
- Consistent, long-term use is crucial for maintaining heart protection.
New research indicates that the heart-protective advantages of GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic and Wegovy, are temporary and disappear quickly after discontinuation. A study of over 333,000 U.S. veterans found that taking a break from these drugs for as little as six months led to a notable rise in major cardiovascular risks compared to continuous users.
The findings, published in BMJ Medicine, highlight that the longer patients remain off GLP-1 therapy, the higher their risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. After two years off the medication, this risk increased by up to 22%, effectively erasing previous benefits. Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a senior author, noted that approximately half of users quit due to cost, side effects, or shortages, leading to a metabolic reversal detrimental to heart health.
Consistent use over three years showed an 18% lower risk of major heart events compared to older diabetes drugs. However, even short gaps weakened these effects. Researchers emphasize the need for healthcare systems to support long-term compliance, managing side effects and addressing costs to ensure patients continue treatment indefinitely for chronic conditions.
