GLP-1 Drugs Boost Male Fertility: New Study Reveals
17 Jun
Summary
- GLP-1 medications may improve male fertility markers like testosterone.
- Obesity negatively impacts male fertility by lowering testosterone.
- New research suggests GLP-1s might offer indirect fertility benefits.

Recent findings suggest that GLP-1 medications, commonly known by brand names like Ozempic and Mounjaro, might enhance several male fertility markers, including testosterone levels and sperm quality. Obesity is a known contributor to both low testosterone and reduced sperm quality in men. Researchers from the UK posit that the weight loss achieved through these drugs is likely responsible for the beneficial effects on fertility.
Obesity can disrupt the male reproductive system by lowering testosterone levels, partly due to fat tissue converting testosterone to estrogen and reducing the production of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). This can lead to hypogonadism, a condition treated by testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). However, TRT has limitations and potential side effects, including risks for individuals with prostate cancer or heart disease.
The new research explored the impact of dulaglutide, liraglutide, and semaglutide on men. Liraglutide demonstrated an increase in testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone, alongside improvements in sperm concentration and count. Semaglutide showed benefits for sperm morphology. While these findings are promising, the research team emphasizes that the evidence is still developing and larger studies are necessary to fully elucidate GLP-1s' role in male fertility.
